Red Beam vs Green Beam Lasers: Which Should You Choose?

One of the most common questions we get asked is whether to buy a red or a green beam laser. Both do the same job — project a dead-level reference line — but they behave differently in the real world. Here's what actually matters when you're choosing.
Green beams are brighter to the eye
The human eye is far more sensitive to green light than red. In practice a green beam looks up to four times brighter than a red one at the same power, which means you can see it more clearly indoors and in daylight. For interior trades — tiling, kitchen fitting, partitions, first-fix — a green beam like the Grettz G4D or the compact G2D is usually the better choice.
Red beams sip battery and cost less
Generating a green beam takes more power, so green lasers drain batteries faster and cost more to make. Red-beam units run longer between charges and are easier on the wallet — which is why they remain popular for long days on groundworks and general site levelling. Does it matter outdoors?
Here's the key point many people miss: outdoors, in bright sun, you often can't see either beam by eye reliably — red or green. That's why outdoor rotary work is done with a laser receiver (detector) clamped to a staff, which picks up the beam electronically and beeps when it's on grade. If you're mostly working outside on foundations, drainage and patios, beam colour matters far less than having a good receiver — so a red-beam kit is often the smarter buy.
