3×360 vs 4×360 Laser Levels: Do You Need the Fourth Line?
Oct 07, 2026
Three 360° laser planes already give you a lot of room coverage. So what does a fourth plane actually add?
The answer is not “more accuracy”. It is another usable reference plane.
What does 3×360 normally mean?
A typical 3×360 laser projects one horizontal plane and two vertical planes crossing at 90°. That gives room-wide horizontal level plus two vertical references for plumb, square and alignment.
That layout is already extremely capable. Current professional products from major manufacturers use three 360° planes.
What changes with 4×360?
A four-plane design normally adds a second horizontal 360° plane. On the Grettz G4D, the lower horizontal plane sits 9mm from the floor.
That can be useful for floor tiling, low-level cabinetry and other work where getting a horizontal line close to floor level reduces awkward offsets or repositioning.
Does 4×360 make a laser more accurate?
No. Plane count and accuracy are separate specifications. A well-made three-plane laser can be more accurate than a poor four-plane laser and vice versa.
When three planes are enough
If most of your work is wall units, partitions, ceiling layout, general carpentry or room alignment, one horizontal plus two vertical planes may give you every reference you need.
When the fourth plane earns its keep
The extra lower horizontal plane becomes most useful when you regularly work close to floor level or want horizontal references at two different heights without moving the laser.
Compare the G4D with 3×360 systems
We've built direct comparisons against established alternatives so you can see the trade-offs rather than just taking our word for it: G4D vs DeWalt DCE089 and G4D vs Bosch Professional 3×360. If you specifically want another four-plane option, see G4D vs Huepar S04CG.
Compare the whole tool
Don't buy purely by counting beams. Check stated accuracy, runtime, power system, mounting, detector compatibility, durability and service support as well.
The bottom line
A 4×360 laser is not automatically “better” than a 3×360 laser. It gives you an additional plane. If your work uses that plane, it can save time. If it doesn't, three 360° planes may be all the laser you need.
