Groundworks is about as hard as it gets on kit. Dust, mud, rain, vibration from plant, and long open distances — a laser level that lives happily on a kitchen refit will not last a month on a civils job. If you're digging footings, laying drainage, reducing levels or setting out roads and slabs, you need a tool built for outdoor work. Here's what actually matters, and which setup we'd recommend.
Why groundworks needs a rotary laser
For outdoor levelling over distance, a rotary laser is the right tool. A rotary spins a single beam through 360°, creating a level plane across the whole site, and — critically — it works with a receiver, so you can pick the beam up in bright daylight at 100 metres or more. Line lasers are excellent indoors but the human eye simply cannot see a static line outside in sunlight at any useful range. The specs that matter on groundworks
- Self-levelling range and speed. On rough ground you'll never set a tripod perfectly. A decent self-levelling head takes care of the last few degrees and re-levels itself after a knock.
- Working range with a receiver. Think in terms of the whole job: drainage runs, kerb lines and slab pours regularly stretch beyond 50 m. A receiver-compatible rotary gives you hundreds of metres of usable diameter.
- Accuracy. Look at the ±mm per 30 m figure and understand how it compounds over distance — we've explained this fully in what ±mm/m really means.
- IP rating and build. IP54 or better keeps out dust and rain. A protective roll cage around the rotary head is worth having when the laser shares a site with excavators.
- Grade (slope) capability. This is the big one for civils. Drainage, car parks and access roads are designed to fall. A dual-grade rotary lets you dial a slope into the laser plane on one or both axes, so the receiver reads the designed fall directly.

Don't forget the staff and tripod
A rotary is only as good as what it sits on and what you read it with.
