Which Laser Level Do You Need for Building a Garden Room?

A garden room isn’t one measuring job. It starts outside with a base, then comes the frame, openings and internal fit-out.

Trying to make one laser do every stage simply because it was expensive is the wrong approach. Choose the reference for the stage you’re working on.

Stage one: base and external levels

This is where a rotary laser can make sense. You’re outside, often working across a larger footprint and transferring the same level reference between several points. A rotary paired with a receiver is designed for that sort of work.

The Grettz G60 is the straightforward option in the range, with up to a 400m working range when used with its receiver. For a normal garden-room footprint, maximum range isn’t the attraction; receiver-based outdoor levelling is.

Stage two: frame and openings

Once the structure starts going up, horizontal and vertical visible references become more useful. The G4D’s four 360° planes can help with studs, door and window openings, partitions, ceilings and transferring levels through the structure.

Stage three: check the component

Keep a physical level nearby. A laser tells you where level or plumb should be; a physical level tells you what the stud or frame directly against it is doing.

Do you need G70 or G80?

Possibly, if the project requires additional rotary functions such as grade work. If you are building a straightforward garden room on a prepared base, those functions may simply be more laser than the project needs.

Don’t forget the basics

Laser equipment does not replace tape measures, stringlines, physical levels, checking diagonals or appropriate construction drawings and specifications.

The bottom line

One project can contain several measuring problems. Outside, a rotary and receiver can establish a useful datum; inside the structure, a multi-line laser can simplify layout; against an individual component, a physical level may still be quickest.
