Laser Level Accuracy Explained: What ±mm/m Really Means

Every laser level has an accuracy figure buried in its spec sheet – something like ±2mm at 10m, or ±0.2mm/m. It is one of the most important numbers on the sheet, and one of the most misunderstood. Get it wrong and you can end up trusting a tool beyond what it can actually deliver, or paying for accuracy you will never use. Here is what those figures really mean in practice, in plain terms.
Reading the spec: ±mm at a distance
Accuracy is usually quoted as a maximum error over a stated distance. A laser rated at ±2mm at 10m means that when the beam is projected onto a surface 10 metres away, the true level line could sit anywhere within 2mm above or 2mm below where the laser says it is. That is a total window of 4mm at that distance.
Some manufacturers quote the same thing as a rate instead: ±0.2mm/m. The two formats are interchangeable – ±0.2mm/m is exactly ±2mm at 10m. When comparing rotary lasers or line lasers from different brands, convert everything to the same format before judging which is tighter.
Error grows with distance
The crucial point: the error is proportional to distance. A laser rated ±0.1mm/m gives you:
- ±1mm at 10m
- ±3mm at 30m
- ±5mm at 50m
Indoors, fitting a kitchen at 5m range, almost any modern self-levelling laser is comfortably within tolerance. Outdoors on groundworks, where you might be reading a receiver 100m or more from the unit, the same spec produces a much bigger real-world window. Accuracy vs precision vs repeatability
Trades tend to use these words loosely, but they matter:
- Accuracy is how close the beam sits to true level.
- Repeatability is whether the unit settles to the same line every time you set it up.
- Beam width also matters at range – a beam that appears several millimetres wide at 30m limits how finely you can mark, whatever the spec says.
A receiver largely solves the beam-width problem outdoors, because it locates the centre of the beam electronically and gives you an on-grade indication rather than asking your eye to judge a fuzzy line.
What tolerance do you actually need?
Match the tool to the job rather than chasing the smallest number:
- Groundworks, footings, drainage falls: typically working to tolerances of several millimetres over long runs – a good rotary spec is essential because of the distances involved. A dual-grade unit like the G80 green beam dual-slope rotary also lets you dial falls in directly.

A spec is only valid while the laser is in calibration
The figure on the box describes the unit as it left the factory. Site life – vibration, knocks, temperature swings, a tumble off the tailgate – gradually pushes a laser out of spec, and it will not tell you when it happens. The beam looks just as crisp when it is wrong.
