Cross-Line Laser Levels for DIY: G2D or G4D?

For most home projects, you don't need a rotary laser or four different modes you'll never use. You need a reliable reference that is quick to set up.

What is a cross-line laser good for?

Shelves, pictures, curtain rails, panelling, small tiling jobs and simple room layouts are classic cross-line jobs. A horizontal and vertical reference is often enough.

G2D: the sensible starting point

The Grettz G2D is compact, projects a green horizontal and vertical cross and has a stated working range up to 30m. For most occasional DIY, that is where we'd start.

When the G4D makes sense

If you're fitting a kitchen, tiling several walls, installing full-room panelling or taking on larger renovation work, the G4D's four 360° planes can save repeated repositioning.

Do you need green?

Green can appear easier to see to the human eye, but room brightness, surface colour and distance still affect visibility. Don't buy solely because someone says green is “four times better”.

Do you need a rotary?

Not for normal indoor DIY. Rotary lasers are better suited to receiver-based site levelling and larger outdoor work.

The bottom line

Start with the G2D if you want a useful laser for normal home projects. Move to a G4D when wider room coverage genuinely saves you time.
